Amoreba
Amoreba is an organic surface that gracefully spreads within contemporary interiors. Its symbiotic embrace with constructed surfaces offers a plush and tactile sensation, transforming rigid interiors into contemporary environments for non-conformists.
Inspiration
Amoreba's design principle draws inspiration from nature, food, the arts and body parts.
Research
Amoreba emerged from GOLEM’s experimental studio as part of our relentless research into developing unconventional spaces that redefine living beyond traditional norms.
Our research led to the development of a custom code within our 3D program, enabling us to deploy our upholstered balls across any surface, transforming rigid interiors into unconventional environments designed for unconventional people.
Adaptive form
It can seamlessly spread across smooth, curved forms while also adapting to complex angles and geometric arrangements. We tailor the design for each project, shaping it to fit the interior and the specific social activities its future users envision.
Having the flexibility to choose virtually any color allows us to either achieve seamless harmony or to create striking contrasts with existing materials depending on the specific needs of each project.
Context
For its first large-scale iteration in Europe, Amoreba was commissioned by an American curator who focuses on underrepresented regions and artists for her apartment in Brussels.
Design brief
The brief was to transform a teenager’s room into a social space for sharing ideas and curated foods and beverages with her special guests, while also providing a guest bed and storage for her oversized books, without competing with the outstanding mid-century context of Jules Wabbes’ interior design.
Shape
The shape the surface takes is determined by both the space it inhabits and the social environment it aims to cultivate. For the Curator’s pit, it has been designed as a comfortable, communal space for sharing ideas, reading, and engaging in conversation, while Eames lounge chair is ideal for solitary moments or Paulin’s Dune meant to be sprawled on.
Tactility
Amoreba is a tactile piece, with each ball shaped as a negative imprint of the palm. Squeezing or stepping on them offers a singular sensory experience, thanks to the carefully crafted blend of fibers inside, giving its touch a distinctive bounce and responsiveness.
Modularity
The void has been dimensioned to accommodate a standard double mattress, allowing it to easily transform into a guestroom. Its height is precisely set, so that when you lie down, the windowsill hides the neighboring building, and you find yourself floating amongst the clouds
Beyond-human
Drawing inspiration from the psychedelic fantasy of reclining in the soft microscopic bumps of a forest mushroom colony, the design is imagined from the perspective of a tiny creature slithering through this buoyant terrain.
In the words of the designer: “Starting from the standpoint of those usually overlooked — here, the microscopic beings — allows us to create new forms and spaces that enrich the experience of life for everyone.”
Fabrication
Amoreba is 100% made in France by skilled artisans using only fabric and fibers produced locally. The fabrication process was designed with sustainability at its core, using a significant proportion of natural materials. Importantly, none of the materials are glued together, allowing each individual ball to be 100% recyclable, thus extending the product’s lifespan virtually indefinitely.
